An ice plant is a production line.
Not only a freezer.

Reliable output depends on the full system: feed-water conditions, ice geometry, refrigeration duty, compressor and condenser selection, automatic harvest, cutting, storage, handling, and the real operating pattern of the site.

  • Plant selection based on required tonnes per 24 hours.
  • Water-contact surfaces, treatment, and hygiene requirements.
  • Compressor, condenser, vessels, freezer, hot-gas harvest, and cutter.
  • Storage, conveyor, bagging, dispatch, operator access, and service route.
  • Ice tube size, thickness, clarity, and production consistency.
  • Power supply, water availability, drainage, and utility planning.
  • Automation, safety controls, maintenance access, and plant reliability.
Industrial tube ice machine system layout
Machine + refrigeration + handling

One ice plant concept.
Different operating duties.

Ice type, size, production pattern, storage method, and plant layout should be selected around the job the ice must perform after it leaves the machine.

Tube ice for fisheries and seafood cooling
Application 01

Fisheries, seafood & cold-chain icing

Ice production for landing centres, fishing harbours, seafood processing, packing, transport, and temperature control from catch to market.

Industrial ice production and bagging
Application 02

Concrete cooling & construction

High-volume ice production for batching and process-water cooling where predictable daily output, handling, and rapid site dispatch matter.

Packed ice storage for food and process applications
Application 03

Food, dairy & process cooling

Ice plants for food processing, dairies, hatcheries, produce cooling, commercial ice supply, and selected chemical or pharmaceutical processes.

Selected from real demand.
Built around the whole cycle.

A practical ice plant begins with daily output and ends with ice leaving the site or process. Every step in between changes the refrigeration load, automation, floor plan, manpower, and utility requirement.

01 / DEMAND

Define the ice requirement

Ice form, tube size, TPD, production hours, peak draw, end use, bag size, and expected storage duration.

02 / WATER

Plan water and ice quality

Feed-water temperature, source, hardness, treatment, hygiene standard, recirculation, drainage, and make-up water.

03 / REFRIGERATION

Select the complete plant

Freezer, compressor, condenser, receiver, accumulator, pumps, valves, hot-gas harvest, cutter, controls, and safety system.

04 / HANDLING

Design storage and dispatch

Conveyors, bins, bagging, cold room, floor drainage, loading route, operator access, maintenance space, and expansion provision.

Core equipment for industrial ice production.

Information needed fora proper ice plant selection.

Use this as a pre-RFQ checklist. Accurate input helps determine machine configuration, refrigeration capacity, utilities, storage, handling, and site layout.

Rough numbers are useful at the first stage. Final capacity, power, dimensions, and performance should be confirmed against the selected model and agreed design conditions.

Ice requirement
Tube ice or other project requirement, intended use, preferred diameter / cut length, and whether ice is edible or process-grade.
Daily capacity
Required tonnes per 24 hours, operating hours, peak hourly demand, seasonal variation, and future expansion target.
Feed water
Water source, inlet temperature, hardness / treatment data, available flow, make-up water, and hygiene requirement.
Storage & handling
Ice bin or cold room, conveyor, crusher if required, bag size, bagging rate, storage duration, and dispatch method.
Site conditions
City, design ambient, installation height, indoor / outdoor arrangement, available plant-room area, drainage, and access.
Utilities
Electrical supply, water availability, cooling-water system, backup power, operating shifts, and utility limitations.
Existing plant
Current machine and compressor model, refrigerant, condenser type, actual output, power use, faults, and service history.
Project stage
New plant, tender, replacement, expansion, retrofit, automation upgrade, spare requirement, or service support.

Common questions before
ice plant selection.

Water freezes automatically inside vertical stainless-steel tubes. At the end of the freezing cycle, hot gas releases the ice, gravity drops it to the cutter, and the machine starts the next automatic cycle.
Metalex’s current online technical table lists TIM5, TIM10, TIM15, TIM20, TIM25, TIM40, and TIM60 models, representing 5 to 60 tonnes per 24-hour day. Final selection must be checked for the project’s design conditions.
Feed-water temperature, ambient and condensing conditions, water quality, compressor performance, utility stability, maintenance, ice size, and operating cycle all influence actual production.
The project should address potable feed water, treatment and filtration, food-contact surfaces, cleaning access, drainage, hygienic storage, bagging, operator practices, and applicable local food-safety requirements.
Ammonia is widely used in industrial refrigeration. Suitability depends on plant scale, system design, charge, site layout, safety provisions, trained operation, and applicable codes. The final refrigerant and architecture should be selected project by project.
Typical applications include seafood and food processing, concrete cooling and chilling, dairies, hatcheries, produce cooling, commercial ice supply, and selected chemical or pharmaceutical processes.
That depends on the mismatch between production and dispatch. Continuous immediate use may need a smaller buffer, while bagging, retail supply, seasonal demand, or transport scheduling can require larger insulated or refrigerated storage.
